What is an Expat?

By definition an expat (or expatriate) is a person who is temporarily residing in a country other than that of their citizenship. The word comes from the Latin terms ex (“out of”) and patria (“country, fatherland”).

Other than Nomads, Expats are usually sent abroad to work on contracts and projects for a certain duration (normally between 18 months and 3 years).

The time being away from home is long enough to get settled in the country of their new residence and fully adapt to a new environment and culture.

Other Motivations for becoming an expat or even an immigrant are new career opportunities, relationships, politics and overall better life circumstances.

Culture shock and adaptations

Depending on the country and new culture, settling in can be quite difficult and it is not uncommon for expats to feel like aliens. This can lead to frustrations, isolation and even depressions. It is a challenging process with which I can help you.

Being an expat myself for most of my life, I’m familiar with the difficulties of adapting to a new culture while staying connected to one’s own cultural values.

The culture shock is only one out of many burden expats might have to face. The following are the most common struggles for expats, which I can help you to overcome.

  • Establishing meaningful relationships within the new social circle
  • losing connections with relatives and friends back home
  • Career and Work Life Balance
  • Addictions and destructive behavior as a compensation for loneliness

Once you have fully adapted to your new place of living and lifestyle you will be able to fully enjoy the reasons why you became an expat and live a fulfilling life.

Let me help you to become a happy expat.
